The Sefton Boarding House project delivers a high-quality affordable housing solution in the fast-growing region of Western Sydney, the traditional home of the Darug and Eora people.

With a brief to make the building stand out, DACCA took design cues from some of the strong multicultural influences that have shaped the local area in recent decades.

Concept & Design

Our approach was to create two buildings on the site, pulling apart the bulk and scale and increasing access to natural light for each of the 28 units.

For design inspiration, we tapped into the architectural heritage of the local Vietnamese and Lebanese communities - using clay bricks common in those countries and rounding the walls to soften the appearance. We contrasted this with contemporary metal cladding for the upper part of the building.

Central to the design is an open courtyard filled with native plants, providing a welcoming space that elevates the amenity and fosters a sense of community among the residents.
